England to Begin the European Championship 2028 Quest at the Etihad Stadium
The English squad will commence their 2028 European Championship adventure at the the home of Manchester City, assuming they attain the anticipated qualification for a championship hosted across most of the United Kingdom and the Irish Republic.
Manchester City’s home ground has not welcomed an England men’s game since eight years ago, when the Turkish team were defeated 2-1 in a friendly, but is almost certain to host the national team for their opening fixture on June 10, 2028.
The team are planned to play their concluding group fixtures at Wembley Stadium, but, should they win the preliminary round, their knockout stage opener would occur at Newcastle’s St James’ Park. Finishing second would mean commencing the elimination stage at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Competition Kickoff and Rally
The event was launched at an event in Piccadilly Circus on Wednesday night. Key representatives from European football’s governing body and the host football associations were barracked as they approached the site by approximately 50 pro-Palestine demonstrators, who demanded Israel’s national side to be removed from international football because of the situation in Gaza.
Banners were raised with phrases saying “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while demonstrators called out: “Kick Israel out.”
Championship Timeline
The opening game of the European Championship will be held at the the national stadium of Wales in the Welsh capital, on June 9, 2028, a game that will include the Dragons if they qualify.
Wembley Stadium will host the penultimate rounds and the title decider, which will be held on Sunday 9 July with a commencement at 5pm.
It is expected that an earlier kick-off, which will also be adopted for UEFA Champions League finals from the following campaign, will attract families and help connect with a more diverse set of fans.
Participating Countries
The Republic of Ireland are scheduled to play their initial fixture at the Aviva Stadium and Scotland would do the same at Hampden Park.
All four host countries’ teams will take part in the preliminary stage; two automatic spots will be set aside for any that miss out on the finals through the standard process.
Venues and Elimination Phase
The Birmingham venue and Spurs’ ground complete the nine tournament locations. All will hold at least one elimination game, with the quarterfinal matches staged at every host’s main arena.
The draw for the qualifiers will be held in the Northern Irish capital, which was dropped as a tournament location last year when it emerged the Belfast stadium could not be renovated in time, on December 6, 2026.
Leadership Comment
