Eurovision Used to Be a Campy Joy – However It Has Transformed Into a Calculated Tool to Whitewash War.

An freshly coined acronym came to light several months after the start of the military campaign against Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it means “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This designation is unique to Gaza, per insights from doctors such as child health specialists. Ordinarily, it is unusual for physicians to care for a child who has seen the death of their whole family. However, there has been nothing “normal” concerning the devastating conflict in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been obliterated and the number of children who have lost limbs exceeds that of any other region in the world. Nothing normal about many doctors arriving back from a landscape of rubble with reports of children being intentionally shot at.

An Unimaginable Crisis Despite a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

Conditions in Gaza persist as a profound humanitarian disaster. Critical healthcare resources are not getting in those in need, and international watchdogs contend that atrocities are still being committed. Authorities disputes these accusations, consistent with how it denies everything it is accused of. Meanwhile, while traumatised orphans are now enduring frigid conditions in temporary shelters, there is some ostensibly positive news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from continuing with its declared purpose of “unity and artistic sharing.” Organizers will continue to roll out a welcoming platform for Israel, although a number of European countries have now pulled out in protest. And this, it seems, is what unity resembles.

The contest, notably prohibited Russia from competing in 2022 due to the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza seems completely different.

Contradictory Principles

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was alleged to have used unfair vote practices last year in what appears to have been an attempt to inject politics into Eurovision. Set aside the news that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Pay no mind to the evidence that aggression from Israeli settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have escalated. Disregard the condition that international journalists are still blocked from freely reporting in Gaza. All of this, it would seem, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds While Ignoring Staggering Tragedy

Eurovision turns 70 next year – roughly two times the projected longevity of an individual in Gaza at present. The broadcast will air, but it will likely never recapture the pure, unadulterated fun it was formerly known for. An institution that initially championed peace has transformed into a transparent instrument to sanitize military aggression.
