Former Treasury Secretary Summers Steps Down from OpenAI Board
One-time economic leader the Harvard professor is departing from the directorate at the ChatGPT creator, just days after a collection of digital correspondence between him and notorious criminal Jeffrey Epstein became widely known.
The economist commented in an announcement that he was "thankful for the opportunity to have contributed, enthusiastic about the prospects of the enterprise, and anticipate tracking their development".
The former Harvard president, who previously presided over Harvard University, stated on Monday that he would be scaling back from public roles due to his association with Jeffrey Epstein.
Digital Correspondence
The newly public communications demonstrated that Summers exchanged messages with Epstein until the day before the financier's 2019 apprehension for alleged sex trafficking of underage individuals.
In another announcement, the AI firm expressed it understood Summers' choice to resign.
"We appreciate his numerous inputs and the perspective he offered to the Board," the organization commented.
Congressional Action
This news arrives after the entire Congress of the legislative branch voted on recently to pass a bill that would require the federal prosecutors to release its files on the case.
The measure will subsequently proceed to the desk of President Trump for signature. He has indicated he expects to approve the bill, after changing his position on the subject following objections from his followers.
Email Contents
A group of Epstein-connected messages disclosed by the House Oversight Committee days ago referenced multiple high-profile figures in the billionaire's past associates, without implying any criminal activity by those people.
The emails indicated that the economist and the financier regularly had dinners together, with he often seeking to introduce the academic to notable global figures.
Personal Accountability
After the messages were released with the public, he expressed he accepted "total ownership for my ill-advised judgment to persist in interacting with the financier".
He further stated that he wanted "to restore confidence and fix bonds with the individuals most important to me".
Career Background
The economist occupied senior posts under party leaders; functioning as economic leader under the former president, and as director of the White House economic team under President Obama.
He headed the institution from the early 2000s and is still a professor there. When declaring his withdrawal from public commitments previously on Monday, he indicated he would maintain his teaching commitments.
Additional Consequences
Following the economist's statement on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a liberal think tank in the capital where the professor was a senior fellow, confirmed that Summers was ceased to be connected with the organization.
Summers entered the directorate of OpenAI, which develops the AI chatbot, in 2023 - following a defeated move to replace its chief executive Sam Altman.
