As he approaches his half-decade plus one year as manager, Mikel Arteta has made it clear that his longevity in North London is fundamentally dependent to winning major honors.
A Look Back: The Arteta Era
The former Arsenal captain took over on the 20th of December in 2019 and soon guided the team to an FA Cup victory a short time later. Yet, that early success remains his lone significant piece of silverware after taking over from Unai Emery.
“Absolutely,” Arteta responded when questioned about staying beyond 2027. “However, it is about today. And many things need to fall into place in the next few months as well to earn the right.”
This weekend sees the landmark with a fixture against Everton, the very same club Arsenal played the day after his role was made public.

As second-placed Manchester City playing against West Ham on Saturday afternoon, Arsenal could be displaced top spot in the Premier League for the first time. This situation arises even with Arteta presiding over a squad that has endured over 100 injuries since the start of last season.
He is under a contract with 18 months to run on the contract he inked in 2024, yet understands fully that success is required promptly.

The manager expanded, emphasizing the daily requirement to prove his worth. “In my view a manager has to earn the right to be here tomorrow. And that is determined by how you react, how you address the media, how you go into the dressing room, the instructions you give.”
He added, commending the consistent faith from the board and owners, but pinpointing the squad's dedication as the key factor. “In the final analysis, the key individuals are those players... During my tenure, I’ve seen just players with a degree of commitment, desire to learn and give their all to the team.”

Even with the availability issues and the high-stakes environment, Arteta feels the club's “focus and dialogue” are completely changed from when he first arrived.
