New York City Mayor Eric Adams Will Support Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayor's Election
New York City Mayor Mayor Adams revealed his decision to support former Governor Cuomo in the forthcoming election for mayor, even after months of disagreements between the pair of Democrats.
A Surprising Reversal After Previous Accusations
Just last month, Adams had lashed out at Cuomo, describing him as a “snake and a liar” and alleging of having “a history of pushing Black candidates out of races.” Yet, in a recent statement, Mayor Adams made a U-turn, revealing he now intends to campaign alongside the former governor in areas where he holds significant backing.
“It is crucial to mobilize the Black and brown communities that have suffered from urban displacement on how critical this race is,” the mayor stated.
He added, “Residents have seen their housing costs rise in terms of neighborhood changes and they have been overlooked in those neighborhoods, and I plan to visit to those neighborhoods and talk directly with community leaders and organizations and I’m going to walk with the former governor in those areas and get them motivated.”
Election Landscape and Current Developments
The election battle has so far been dominated by the contest between Cuomo and democratic socialist his main rival, whose growing support has drawn interest internationally and symbolized hopes for a rejuvenated leftwing of the Democratic party.
During a recent candidate forum, both the democratic socialist and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa declared they would refuse the mayor's support if offered.
Months ago, Adams had begun his re-election campaign as an independent after facing legal accusations which were later dropped in return for his assistance with government enforcement actions across New York City.
During a separate media briefing on Thursday, Adams responded to reporters inquiring into the support announcement by stating, “Andrew and I will appear together this evening.”
This development followed a day after the two politicians were spotted attending a game side-by-side at the New York Knicks’ season opener at the famous arena, which took place immediately following a contentious candidate debate.
