A significant industrial complex located on the outskirts of Jakarta is addressing nuclear contamination following a government taskforce detected traces of the dangerous isotope Caesium-137 at 22 manufacturing facilities within the site, which includes companies that export frozen marine products.

The finding has led to immediate cleanup operations and the moving of local inhabitants, coming after a comparable contamination alert in the United States that was linked to the Indonesian plants.

Investigation and Discovery of Pollution

Indonesian officials initiated an inquiry when the US Food and Drug Administration identified Caesium-137, a nuclear substance, in a shipment of chilled breaded shrimp exported by an Indonesian company.

The FDA issued an advisory advising suppliers and sellers to discard the product and avoid selling it, even though the found amount was well under the authority's action limit. It added that the amount of Caesium-137 it had found would not pose an acute hazard to consumers.

The FDA stated: “The main health effect of concern after extended, repeated low dose exposure (for example through consumption of contaminated food or water over time) is an increased chance of the disease, resulting from damage to DNA within body cells.”

Widespread Contamination and Medical Checks

Radiation scans revealed at least 22 factories in the manufacturing area were affected. The Indonesian taskforce did not identify the twenty-one other production facilities, but confirmed they would immediately undergo decontamination processes conducted by the country's nuclear authority.

A senior official declared that people living in strongly polluted zones would be relocated until the location was decontaminated, emphasizing that the well-being of the inhabitants was the “top priority”.

Health officials additionally performed examinations on nearby workers and residents located close to the industrial zone, identifying nine individuals who showed signs for exposure to Caesium-137. These individuals were referred to a hospital before being cleared to go back.

Decontamination and Isolation Plans

The contaminated sites will immediately undergo decontamination procedures by the national nuclear institute. Officials have further designated the area of a recycled metal plant as an containment facility for polluted goods.

The country, which operates no atomic energy facilities or arms programme, believes that Caesium-137 may have come into the country from abroad.

An official spokesperson told reporters that recycled metal imports were the probable cause of pollution and confirmed the government would immediately enforce restrictions on scrap metal imports.
