Southport killer's sibling was afraid he would take lives, inquiry hears
The older brother of the perpetrator revealed his parents "lost control" of their child and he feared his family member would kill a individual of their household, a hearing has heard.
The attacker, a teenager, murdered three youngsters at a celebrity-themed dance workshop on July 29, 2024.
The Southport Inquiry, sitting at Liverpool Town Hall, heard the attacker's brother Dion Rudakubana told a close contact there was a possibility of his relative "doing something that could kill."
The investigation was informed the brother messaged his associate over the online platform: "Confrontations are frightening because of the danger of loss of life."
The sibling stated his sibling was similar to the violent character in the film the thriller.
Growing Tensions
The hearing heard he was identified with a health issue at the age of 12 which led to him relying on a chair and his family offering greater support.
When asked by the lawyer, counsel to the inquiry, if that changed his relationship he replied: "Strain developed that came about."
Dion concurred his brother seemed to dislike this change.
He testified the investigation that after the family left the Welsh capital to Southport his relative's behavior declined and he would have "aggressive episodes."
Proceedings was informed he became "increasingly wary" of his brother, who would physically assault him frequently.
He stated: "I needed to be careful if I tried to communicate to him because every argument could turn into an argument."
'Genuine concerns'
He testified his relative became much more aggressive after he was expelled from Range High School in that region, in that period.
He left for university in that year and the two had diminishing contact "because he was not familiar with having me around."
The hearing was made aware of a message he wrote to a friend on the service in which he mentioned his sibling was angered by him having conversations after dark because of the poor insulation in their house.
He additionally informed his friend there was a risk of "his committing an act potentially fatal."
He wrote: "Arguments are frightening because of the danger of a fatality."
The lawyer asked: "You held real worries that your brother would fatally harm a member of your family?"
The brother responded: "Should situations worsen to that extent."
The counsel inquired how his family responded to the attacker's violent behaviour.
"It didn't make sense to attempt to discipline him," he stated. "Additionally, there was a heavy risk in proceeding that way.
"We discussed there was a widespread threat to safety in general conversation, if you seek to address him... it would not end well."
When Mr Boyle asked if his mother and father had lost control of his brother, he acknowledged.
Inquired concerning his brother being similar to a figure from the picture No Country for Old Men, Dion stated: "It was said that character's intended as a sociopath and that's why I employed that term there."
He testified the last interaction he had with his relative was in the summer of 2023.
He confirmed that their parents told the killer to bid farewell to him as he was going to meet his associates and his relative tossed a container at him but the entryway shut before it struck.
