Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than over two decades in incarceration, but he remained under house arrest pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after fresh information were revealed.

This included trying to remove his tracking device and a summons to a demonstration that could enable a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the custody, Justice Moraes said information from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's aim to disable the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His child, his son Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on online platforms on last Friday: Will you battle for your nation, or see it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the potential of the former president's transfer to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a background of arranging to request asylum through a consular facility", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork underscores that the United States embassy in the capital, the capital city, is situated around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.

International Reactions

Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist US President Donald Trump, causing him to enact a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.

He is being kept in a Federal Police station in the capital and will experience a detention review on Sunday.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with tracking devices.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be permitted to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he needed ongoing care for lung conditions and other ailments.

Background on Conviction

He was found guilty of heading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plot which involved plans to assassinate Lula and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the backing of the armed forces officials. The current president was sworn in without incident on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, numerous his backers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The law enforcement stepped in and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The magistrates found that the rioters had been provoked by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, restore order and bring him back to power.

At the period, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him running in the 2026 national vote.
